RRP&F: Tell us how you first met? Who, what, when, where and why? Give us all the details.
S+M: We met in pre-calculus class during our junior year of high school. Michael was a classic underachiever who slept through classes, whereas Sasha was a diligent student and one of the top in their class. While Michael was drifting off, Sasha would secretly be watching him and wondering what he was like. One day they were randomly paired up for a partner test. Michael was elated as he thought she would save his grade, Sasha was ecstatic to finally have her chance to talk to him. It didn’t take long for them to realize that neither had a clue about the material on the test. So rather than waste the effort, they decided to draw and talk instead. They ended up talking through the entire class period. Both of them felt amazed at how effortlessly they were able to converse. It was almost as if they had known each other all along. Then life went on as usual, until one day Sasha no longer showed up to class. Michael was disheartened to find out that she had moved to Michigan. Michael learned of Sasha’s return about a month into their senior year, when she yanked on his backpack and said “Michael Damiano, how’s it going?” They spent the next few minutes between classes catching up about the end of last school year and then parted ways again. The next encounter they would have would be the one to change everything: the day that Sasha gave Michael “the note.” Sasha had spent nearly two weeks revising this note and finally had the courage to hand it to him one day as lunch was ending. She approached him, said “I want you to have this” and then hastily exited the cafeteria. As he opened the note, Michael felt his heart begin to race. The note read: “I just wanted to let you know that you randomly make me smile. I keep getting these hilarious images of you carelessly sleeping in pre-calc. I hope we can talk some time. I’m curious about the end of last year after I moved. And how close to passing you were…” The next day, Michael asked Sasha out on a group date, which he showed up to with a bouquet. After an amazing first date, Michael asked Sasha to be his girlfriend. Later that year, Michael took Sasha to prom, just like she had dreamed of. The rest would prove to be history.
RRP& F: When did you know he/she was the one? Was there something he/she did?
S+M: We have had a long journey since then. After high school, they both went off to college. Sasha got a full-ride scholarship to William Paterson University, while Michael went to BCC and William Paterson, before finally finding his place at The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey. Sasha graduated in the spring of 2011 and promptly got a job as a Spanish teacher. Michael graduated in the Fall of 2014. After several difficult years of only seeing each other on weekends, Sasha finally moved in with Michael’s family and, at last, their long-distance relationship had ended… Sasha knew Michael was the one only 7 months into their relationship when they went to prom. Reflecting on the 7 wonderful months she had spent with him and the feeling she would get when looking into his eyes, she knew he'd be the one she'd eventually marry. As for Michael, he wouldn't have even bothered asking me out if he couldn't see himself spending a long time with me. He doesn't recall there being a precise moment when he knew Sasha was the one.
RRP&F: Tell us about the proposal. (Did you see it coming? How long was it in the planning? How did you feel? Nervous, excited, freaking out?)
S+M: On December 6, 2014, Michael drove Sasha up to Mitsuwa Marketplace in Edgewater. After some shopping and a nice meal, Michael suggested that they take a walk along a path by the Hudson. It was rainy and cold and the water was rough. Clearly seeing that Sasha was still agitated by sitting in traffic for hours, Mike decided to stop and talk to her. He began to speak, “You know, it took a while to get here, but we made it. We’re right where we wanted to be. It’s kind of like our relationship. It’s taken a long time and we are finally where we always wanted to be.” With the New York skyline as a backdrop, Michael got down on one knee and asked Sasha to marry him. She gave him a teary-eyed yes and a long kiss. From a crush, to high school sweethearts, to betrothed; they have shared one amazing experience after another. And finally, after almost 11 wonderful years together, they will tie the knot in front of some of the most fantastic family and friends that anyone could ever hope for.
RRP&F: If you feel comfortable, share with us something silly or quirky the other person does.
S+M: Sasha often makes goofy noises. Michael flicks people's noses.
RRP&F: Besides getting married – what's the one thing you are looking forward to on your wedding day?
S+M: Unanimously, the food.
